Gratitude Over Bitterness

  1. Story behind the poem

Feeling all alone, in a room full of people,

So invisible

Yet the loneliness so impossible to hide,

Every laughter,

Cheers, hands clapping,

Huddles, murmuring,

I feel counted out,

As though I am not here!

It is not so long,

Until resentment builds,

My sweetheart,

Has become sour,

My tangy expression,

Clear to see, I am void of enjoyment!

Do I even belong here?

How am I part of this?

No one is listening,

My futile attempts to say something,

My words, hitting a wind shield,

I can see they heard them,

But it is as though they reached no one.

Like a water drop,

They just slide right off!

A darkness grows in me,

Trapped in a blank space,

My smile just an act,

I gnash my teeth,

A hell on earth,

Bothered by all this.

Feeling alone in this place,

Cold in the void,

Forever ago,

Until I heard a friendly voice.

Then a comforting hand touched my chest,

Sweetening this bitter heart.

Your warm look melting my cold gaze,

I feel seen!

‘Child,

All your life,

This feeling always licked at your hill,

Day by day,

Clamping tightly with its claws,

Devoured in its jaws,

You have never felt like you belong!’

‘For the first time,

Be honest with yourself.’

‘Tell me,

Is there someone who’s fault this is?’

‘Do you know where you belong?’

‘What of your value?’

‘Are you aware that I am looking over you?’

‘‘And that I am listening?’

‘Can you hear that I am saying something back to you?’

‘Thus,

When you feel unheard,

And when you are sitting in a room,

And no one seems to see you,

You know I am standing right there.’

My gaze, your way,

attention fully yours,

And anytime you wish to converse,

I am all ears!’

‘Tell me something,

When you look around the room,

Just as you wish,

Don’t you see people who also wish to be seen and heard?’

‘Child,

Get out of that dark place!’

‘Now feel the warmth,

Of my embrace.’

‘I hold you close,

Let me dust off all this sourness,

And fill your heart chock-full of honey!’

‘So now,

DO you understand?

That you need not harbour resentment?’

‘Now sit still,

Check in,

Get curious,

And get to know someone.

‘Listen to their story,

And before you know it, you are in my place,

Warming another’s heart,

As I have yours!’

‘And as such,

Know I am here.’

‘You are not alone,

Although it feels as such.’

‘You are blessed,

So,

Dear child,

Be grateful!’
